'If I wasnt Fela's son, I would have gone farther than this' - Seun Kuti

The youngest son of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti and new father Seun Kuti tells City People mag about the limitations his dad's name has brought to his music career....
"I dont believe that being Fela's son has helped my career. Yes I am fela's son. Yes I grew up to love music through him. Most people believe it's easier looking in, when you are out. Everything just seems easier that way. But I keep saying that the fact that I am Fela's son, for me it didn't really help me musically. The fact that I am Fela's son has brought me more stress than good fortune. I believe if I wasn't Fela's son with my amount of talent and what I have been able to achieve, I would have gone far. What people see in Nigeria is 'Hey, he is just like his father. Who is seun? Oh, he is Fela's son' and that is it. They dont bother to look deep into what I am doing. I see them singing high praises of people here that for me, musically, I dont see what they are singing. What I am saying is Yes I am Fela's son but it still took me 10 years to get my record deal after his death.
Me I believe I have paid my dues. There was no Fela's name helping me get anything. My brother, Femi, won that lottery, I have to say. There was already one Kuti out there. It's like that with music families. There is only one person that is pushed by the name. The others have to strive. Being Fela's son, especially when you have a brother that is already out there, will make it difficult for you after him. What that does to you is that they listen, but before they listen, they have already set the standard so high. I am lucky that still with all the talk and comparisons all the time, I am still able to break my own barriers and we are doing our own thing. The band and I, and we have achieved great success. Since the first album, internationally, we have been able to close that chapter of people comparing us. They now know that we are our own force. Right now the band has made more money, played in more places than they ever did under my dad.

Fayemi, threat to peaceful election in Ekiti –Bamidele

Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele and Governor Kayode Fayemi

THE political face-off between Ekiti State Governor Kayode Fayemi and one of his major challengers in the 2014 governorship election, House of Representatives member, Opeyemi Bamidele, assumed a new dimension on Sunday with the latter accusing the governor in an open letter of threatening the peaceful conduct of the election in the state.
Bamidele, in the open letter, copies of which were made available to journalists in Ado Ekiti on Sunday, told Fayemi that he was stirring political violence and deceiving the people of the state.
But Fayemi said the lawmaker’s accusations were not true. He also accused Bamidele of being at the root of political violence in the state.
Part of Bamidele’s letter read, “I have taken my time to read through your New Year message of January 1st, 2014 in which you, among other things, expressed your concern for security of lives and properties in the state.
“Your Excellency, I feel compelled at this point to write to express my concern, like many well-meaning stakeholders in Ekiti State, over your seeming capacity to say one thing and do the exact opposite.
“To begin with, putting yourself in my shoes, how would I and my constituents believe your professed commitment to protection of properties if I made statutory payments to the Signage Agency under your office to mount 16 billboards as an elected Representative to wish people who elected you and I into office a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year on the 22nd of December 2013 and, in less than 48hrs thereafter, your political appointees had destroyed all of the billboards while you conveniently looked away?
“Or how can I and the two young widows and three children as well as relatives and kinsmen of late Folusho Ogundare, my supporter who was killed in a most gruesome manner on the street of Emure-Ekiti on November 3, 2013 and in respect of which nine members of your Excellency’s second term campaign team are still in police custody, believe your self-acclaimed commitment to protection of lives and other rhetorical claims in your New Year message?
“If you really ask me, your Excellency, I fear that you, probably without knowing it, constitute the greatest threat to the realisation of a free and fair election in Ekiti State in 2014 owing to your seeming allergy to any form of opposition as well as the intransigence of many of the political gladiators you surround yourself with in Ekiti and who seem to have finally boxed you into a corner.
“Your Excellency, how, for instance, will you explain the fact that you and your cronies are the only elected and appointed public servants or statesmen who can air their views and programmes on the  Television and Radio components of the Broadcasting Service of Ekiti State? Their refusal to air paid advertorials and programmes due to what has been termed “order from above” is clearly in violation of known guidelines of the National Broadcasting Commission, thereby denying the populace of the needed information aside from government propaganda.
“It is a fact known to many today that the reason you have deliberately chosen to deny access to critical stakeholders and manipulate information dissemination through the state-owned electronic media is so that you can actually rule without being criticised.”
The lawmaker accused the governor of championing a smear campaign against his person and masterminding crisis in the Labour Party to which he recently defected.
But, the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Yinka Oyebode, in a reaction described Opeyemi’s allegations as “outburst of a liar and mischief maker.”
He said, “Opeyemi Bamidele is either genuinely ignorant or is deliberately mischievous. Whichever is the case, it is important to say that his letter is a mixture of outright lies and deliberate distortion of issues.
“MOB should be blamed for introducing violence to Ekiti politics. The rising tension in the politics of Ekiti started immediately he joined the race with his penchant for importing thugs from Ondo State to cause mayhem in Ekiti. He remains the greatest threat to the 2014 poll. But the good news is that the 2014 contest is about Ekiti development and not about brigandage.”

My ideal man must be handsome - Niyola

Niyola

My name is Eniola Akinbo but for the purpose of my music, I am known as Niyola.  I had a well-rounded childhood and my father was a very strong influence in my life. I have nine siblings and I’m the last child. I read books, played and got into trouble like every other child. I learned to be responsible early in life and this has helped me handle good and bad times.

Journey to music
I realised I could sing when I was a child. My father took me to a Funmi Adams concert when I was eight years old. That experience opened my eyes and inspired me. As a teenager, I competed in the Amen Starlet Competition in 2000.  That was when I was introduced to the Nigerian music scene, but I did not make my professional music debut until 2005.

Kind of music
My music genre is contemporary R&B/Pop.   I grew up listening to R&B/Pop acts.  I make music tailored to how I feel at every point in time.  My sound is original and I also infuse a lot of Yoruba into my music.

Deal with Empire Mate Entertainment
I met Banky W, CEO of EME several years ago at the first edition of the Ovation Red Carol.  He heard me singing the theme song and he was impressed.  A few years after when I decided to make my comeback into music after a long hiatus, I did a collaboration with Skales who was already signed unto EME. I went over to the EME studio a few times to work on the song, ‘Unpredictable.’ Banky and I got talking again and a short while later, I was signed to the label.

Life as First Lady of EME
I’ve always grown up among guys. It feels good to know that I have more guys to call my family. There is of course an added responsibility when you’re the only female on a record label, but I can handle the pressure. It feels good to know that there are people looking out for me. If there is any competition in house, it is a friendly one. We all make different types of music so it would be pointless for anyone to want to compete with others.

Being sexy
I have always been self-aware. I am a woman and have always been conscious of my body and the effect it has on the opposite sex. I am me and being sexy is innate. It is not something I do on purpose, it’s like breathing. I don’t know for a fact if it has helped increase my acceptability or made me marketable. I want to believe my music does all that for me.

Sophomore album
My first album with EME is in the works. The three singles I’ve released are all from this album and the rest of the music I will release will also be from it. There are many sides to me, and with each new single, I give the audience a new glimpse of me, my music and my style. My music is a part of me and we want to ensure everyone is ready for Niyola’s second album.

Competition
I’m a firm believer in running my race. Competition helps but it should not be the only reason why we take action. I am very hard on myself and I am my biggest critic. Nothing good in life comes easy and I do not expect to be handed anything on a silver platter.  If there were no obstacles, my story would not be memorable.

Fame
My biggest issue with my growing fame is the increasing lack of privacy and the demands on my time. It seems like these days I can barely get a moment to myself. There is always something or someone demanding some of my attention, but it’s the life I chose so I’m dealing with it.

Mr. Right
I’m not in a relationship and I don’t like the phrase Mr Right. Any man that I would get involved with has to possess certain basic qualities. I have a strong personality so, my man must be confident. Any man who lacks self-confidence will not be able to live with a strong woman. He must also have the fear of God. This is very important and he must be intelligent. It also helps if he is good looking. Attraction is important in a relationship.

My style
I like to keep it simple. Style for me is comfort, elegance and class.  I dress according to the occasion and the message I’m trying to pass across with that particular look. It doesn’t necessarily have to go with everybody’s approval .I think what you wear is a personal choice.
