BN Cuisine with Dooney’s Kitchen: Efo Riro Like It Should Be Done!

A couple of weeks ago, I was amidst some friends and new people and the topic of food and cooking came up. I was not surprised when the conversation led to cheap pot shots about Yoruba women not knowing how to cook, and of course an argument ensued.

Knowing Nigerians and how we can argue over the smallest of things, the argument escalated. In a bid not to join in, I just sat there and let them have a go at it, all the while having a smirk on my face, and perpetually raising my eyebrow, I was surprised it hadn’t uprooted from my face. At some point one of them suddenly remembered I was seated and he said “ah sorry Dunni, you are an exception, you are even half Yoruba anyway“. As if I escaped half of “the curse”. Mind you my mum and grandma; Yoruba women taught me how to cook. At that point, I saw my chance to lay it into him and the rest of them real good.
Yoruba people get a lot of flack about not knowing how to cook or are culturally deficient in terms of delicious dishes. I really don’t know where that assumption and annoying stereotype came from. When it is time for people to diss cooking, they seem to take easy shots at Yoruba people, especially females. Oh, Yoruba food is this, it is this way, it is one kind. I personally have been at the receiving end of such derogatory comments. I always smile with glee when I get the chance to shut them up. You just let my Aunty Beebee from Ibadan prepare Gbegiri with Ewedu for you and you will drop to your knees, or my Iperu relatives cook a wicked Ifokore, you will sing to high heavens. My late grandma’s Palm oil stew will knock your socks off. Need I mention Ofada sauce which virtually everyone wants to learn how to cook. Moi-Moi elemi meje was named for a reason. My Ondo and Ijesha friends will put my manual yam pounding skills to shame. I don’t even know if I should continue typing. There are so many dishes in Yoruba land, I don’t know where the misconception started from. Pardon me, I am a little vexed. I am about to shut some people up today.
In no part of the world do all the women have cooking on lockdown. It is a myth. Cooking is not a gene that can be inherited. It is a skill like any kind of skill. Some do great at it, some don’t. It shouldn’t be used to judge a person, or their character or damn an entire tribe of people for that matter. You have good cooks and bad cooks. I have tasted many terrible dishes made by women who are from areas famed for cooking in Nigeria. Many, many times. My best ever Tiramisu was served in Paris by a Middle Eastern Chef. Not in Italy or by an Italian.
May the real Efo Riro please stand up? This is one of the glory dishes of the Yoruba cuisine. The Edikang Ikong of Yoruba people. If you have tasted this cooked properly, you will agree with me. Funny story. I have used this particular soup to *cough* *cough* shut up a particular older woman and her entourage of “ebi” who just did not like me because I was Yoruba “aje butter”, so I must be lazy and not know how to cook. The look on her face after tasting this was priceless. Absolutely priceless. She announced loudly in a room full of people. Ah all your sins have been forgiven (which sins?), you haven’t offended me again. We thought you couldn’t cook. She ate the soup with so much relish, the other people in the room flew from their seats to get plates. My ears must have been burning that day from praise. I have never witnessed that much instant transformation from outright coldness to warmth as if I was some long lost child. Suddenly, I was being asked “when are you coming again to see us o”. I just sat there faking a smile on my face, meanwhile inside, I was hissing

and rolling my eyes. So, all it took was food. Chai. “I for don cook since na”. A part of me wanted to interject, sarcastically, so Yoruba girls cannot cook eh. My mother would have had my head because she raised me better.
Sorry, but I am going all Yoruba on this recipe.
What You Need
Efo Soko – Soko vegetables, the big daddy of Efo Riro
Iru horo – whole locust beans
Tatashe – red bell pepper
Ata Rodo – scotch bonnet/habanero pepper
Ede gbigbe – crayfish
Eja Sawa – dried fish
Eja Osan – dried fish
Ara Eran – Beef
Saki – tripe
Pomo – cow hide
Epo pupa – palm oil
Alubusa – red onion
Iyo – Salt
Iyo Knorr – seasoning cubes
Yoruba lesson ends here!

How To
Boil and season all the meats with salt, lots of chopped onions and seasoning cube. Halfway through cooking, throw in the Eja Sawa. Eja Sawa is a very dry and hard fish. It is common to soak it in hot water, but this loses some of its flavour, so I add mine shortly before the meats have properly softened so it has a symbiotic relationship with the stock. It is one of the few dried fish that can hold its own against the strong flavours of meat.
The secret to any great tasting soup is the stock. If you get this right, you will not need seasoning cubes at the latter stages of cooking the soups. If your soups have always tasted the same, boil the meats with eja sawa, use the stock and watch people lick their fingers in pure delight. I just gave out one of my secrets. Shhhhhhh. Another option is to boil the meats with stockfish. I use both methods, but Eja Sawa trumps stock fish by miles, in terms of the resulting stock.

Roughly blend the Tatashe (Bell Pepper) and ata rodo (scotch bonnet pepper). Bring this to a boil and reduce till it forms a thick paste. Proper Efo Riro just like Edikang Ikong is not liquidy or dripping.
Give the Iru (locust beans) and the crayfish a good rinse. Remember not to drown the Iru in water in order not to lose the flavour. Rinse the eja osan thoroughly and shred into bits. Dice the onions and set aside. You need all the ingredients prepped before you start.
Heat up palm oil and fry the onions till it is translucent. Add the boiled pepper and Iru and fry for a few minutes. You want this to fry till you have a thick paste, because of the stock which will be introduced to dilute it slightly.
Once it is fried, add the meats, and ground crayfish to the pot. Add stock in cooking spoonfuls to the pot and stir. You have to be really careful with the stock so you don’t end up with liquidy Efo Riro (before you get accused of not knowing how to cook. )
Lower the heat, to allow the meats to absorb the essence of the pepper, Iru and crayfish. Let this cook for 3 – 5 minutes. You also do not want to use high heat, which will evaporate the stock. Keep frying till you have a semi-thick stew that tastes heavenly. It is just about to taste even better. You may not even need to re-season with salt and/or seasoning cube if you get the balance very well. If after tasting you still need to, go ahead.
Add the soko and dried fish. You always add the dried fish with the vegetables for two reasons. 1. So it doesn’t break down. 2. You want its taste to stand on its own. Dried Fish has the tendency to absorb all the flavours around it, so the less time it spends in a pot filled with bold flavours, the better.
Vegetables are absorbent, so once it is in the pot, stir to increase its interaction with the already fried sauce. It will absorb the sauce and at the same time leach out it’s own liquids, creating a beautiful chemistry. Lower the heat further so you don’t lose the nutritional value while you are allowing it to soak up all the delicious goodies. Cook for about 3 minutes, 5 if you are cooking with a larger quantity of vegetables.

Auto-crash claims two on Lagos-Ibadan road

Ibadan - Two people were  confirmed dead in an auto-crash that occurred on Friday near Ajanla  on the  Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The News Agency of  Nigeria (NAN) reports that the vehicles involved were an Abuja-bound white Toyota Hiace bus marked Lagos XA 889 SMK and an unregistered black Liberty Jeep.

The two victims, both male adults, were said to have died on the spot.

Sanya Adeoye, the Assistant Corps Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Oluyole Unit 1, told NAN that the one of the drivers lost control while trying to overtake.

Immediately the FRSC team was informed, it moved to the scene to rescue and ascertain the cause of the crash.

We were told by a surviving victim in the bus that the jeep tried to overtake them in a reckless manner.

“She said in the process, the driver of the jeep lost control and hit the bus on the side which led to the crash,'' he said.

Adeoye said 18 passengers were involved in the crash, with  four in the jeep and 14 in the bus, comprising of 11 male and seven female adults.

He added that the corpses of the victims had been deposited at the Adeoyo State Hospital morgue in Ibadan.

Adeoye said that the injured victims were rescued and taken  for treatment at the University College Hospital, Ibadan.

"Motorists should always have at the back of their minds that the importance of a journey is to travel from point A to point B safely.

"Doing this will serve as a guide for them to drive appropriately without being a danger to other road users.

"They must avoid over-speeding, drive cautiously and defensively because of the bad roads and the rains,''  he added.

Ignore Perez Hilton, tweets Lady Gaga

It's back to normal for celebs on Twitter — tweet-slapping each other and counting up the retweets.
Earlier this week Lady Gaga and Cher were going against convention by exchanging sweet tweets about their new duet, The Greatest Thing. Now a new feud may be a brewing between Gaga and goofball gossip blogger Perez Hilton.
It's hard to tell exactly what set this latest tiff off; possibly it was Hilton's post on Facebook and his tweet of the same, suggesting that Gaga's latest single, Applause, was "flopping" on iTunes when it was released this week.
The single was overtaken by Katy Perry's Roar and Robin Thicke's ongoing summer triumph, Blurred Lines.
"Still have the text Perez sent me of me in a wheelchair w the words KARMA written across + Madonna pointing a gun at me. Day of my accident," Gaga tweeted.
Gaga fans rounded on Hilton, who was called all sorts of names ("hypocrite" was a mild one), and one person hoped he'd be run over by Katy Perry's truck.
"Perez Hilton is the most annoying and rude and fake person you'll ever meet! LADY GAGA RULES THE WORLD!" was a typical remark, tweeted by a user called Gaga Portugal.
A few exasperated tweeters tweet-shouted "a pox on both their houses."
"People are talking about Perez Hilton and Lady Gaga but at the end of the day he's still making money and so is she so get over it," tweeted someone with a handle we can't print.
"you're both disgusting shady selfish losers you should kiss and make up your perfect for one another," tweeted someone else named Joey.
Gaga saw that further discussion was pointless. "Please monsters do not be affected by someone like this NOTHING merits this kind of hatred. Im ok & I always survive. Ignore him. Just Dance," she concluded.
If you think this exchange was hopelessly unedifying, then you didn't hear about thefeud that broke out between Kim Kardashian and newswoman-turned-talk-shot host Katie Couric today.
New-mom Kardashian lashed out from her maternity lair against Couric for sending her a baby gift. Really. Apparently, the gift didn't mollify Kardashian's ire over an InTouchmag interview with Couric in which she confessed befuddlement about why the Kardashians are so famous.

The Traditional African Father in America? Watch the Trailer for “Papa” by Ivorian Filmmaker Bambadjan Bamba

As Africans, we struggle to hold on to what we call the traditional even as the strong tides of modernization threaten to sweep us away. Often times this may be good and at other times, it may be really bad!
Ivorian film maker Bamba Bambadjan‘s short film “Papa” showcases the little nuances of living in America with deeply entrenched African cultural beliefs.
Synopsis
“Papa” is a coming of age drama based on real events. Papa (Souleymane Sy Savane) is a unwavering African father who runs his household with an iron fist; while Pepe (Matthew Elam) his youngest rebellious son forces him to either reconsider his ways or risk losing his entire family. In a time where Africans are continually infused in different cultures around the globe, PAPA tells a story of a family struggle to co-exist between tow cultures, exploring the family dynamics with immigrant families that are faced with the harsh reality of adopting to a new culture and social norms. It’s a lesson for today’s family on how to understand the rebellion/redemption of the parent/child relationship that we believe would be an interest to your readers.

The film will be screening at the HollyShort Film Festival in Los Angeles at the TLC Chinese Theater.

Moment officers swooped in to stop sham marriage between Nigerian student and Hungarian woman

This is the dramatic moment home office investigators put a stop to a sham marriage just minutes before the bride and groom exchanged their vows.

Nigerian Chinedu Amadi arrived at Leicester Registry Office to marry a complete stranger - Hungarian national Szilvia Basco-Porkolab, who donned a traditional white wedding gown for the occasion.

But unbeknown to them Home Office investigators who were tipped off by a suspicious registrar and lay in wait in a side room for the pair to arrive. These pictures show the moment the 'couple' were told they had been caught and were arrested. Shit mehn! Lol. Continue...

Amadi, a Nigerian student, paid £5,000 to an unknown 'fixer' to arrange the bogus wedding with an EU national to allow him to stay in the UK. After their arrest, investigators discovered Basco-Porkolab was involved in an earlier sham marriage to another Nigerian, Ikechukwu Egbe, at Greta Green in May 2011.

Basco-Porkolab, 38, living in Leicester, admitted two counts of conspiracy to breach immigration laws relating to sham marriages, and was jailed for 34 months.
Amadi, 27, of Livingstone Road, Gillingham, admitted a similar count and was jailed for 20 months.
Egbe, 34, of Narborough Road, Leicester, was convicted of one offence of conspiracy, and jailed for 30 months.

A fourth person, Rubin Durgos 39, admitted conspiracy, in the intended sham marriage of Amadi. She was to be the bride, before Basco-Porkolab stepped in at the last minute.
Durgos, a Hungarian, of Forest Road, Coalville, Leicestershire, was jailed for 20 months.
Sentencing at Leicester Crown Court, Judge Philip Head said: 'What you did in your own ways was to cheat all those who loyally and honestly abide by the system.'

Andy Radcliffe, a Home Office inspector, said after the case: 'These were brazen attempts to trample over both the immigration laws and the institution of marriage

'Amadi had such contempt for the law that he felt he could change his bride during the process of organising the wedding and still get away with it. Durgos and Porkolab thought they could marry as often as they liked. They were wrong.
'The message is clear - immigration abuse will not be tolerated and we will take the strongest possible action against those involved.

'We work closely with registrars across the region and our dedicated crime teams will continue to make life as tough as possible for those who seek to abuse the immigration system.'
Neil Bannister, prosecuting, told the court: 'The offences came to light with the intended marriage, initially, between Durgos and Amadi.

'Both attended Leicester Registry Office to give their notice of intention to marry, on October 21. They met the deputy superintendent registrar for Leicester, Debra Webster.
'Mrs Webster recognised Durgos as someone she knew as Rita Durgos, a Hungarian who had acted as an interpreter for more than one marriage.
'These marriages involved Hungarians and nationals from countries outside the European Economic Area.

'Mrs Webster became suspicious as to whether Durgos and Amadi were going to enter a genuine marriage.

'Durgos struggled to pronounce the first name of Amadi and he struggled to remember his address.
'Mrs Webster also thought the couple were being excessively affectionate and gained the impression they were trying too hard to demonstrate they were a couple.
'Arrangements were made for a marriage on January 19.
'On that date, a woman claiming to be Rubin Durgos turned up but Mrs Webster did not recognise her. It is not known who that woman was.
'Amadi was an hour late and missed the ceremony, so a further date was arranged for 2pm on February 14.'
By then Mrs Webster had alerted the authorities.
Mr Bannister added: 'Meanwhile, information came to light Durgos had been married to a Godwin Okechuku, a Nigerian, on July 4, 2008, at Christ the King Church, Beaumont Leys, Leicester.'
On February 14, Mrs Webster noted the bride was different from Durgos and the woman who attended on January 19.
When arrested in a wedding dress, she initially told officers she was attending as a witness.
In mitigation, the court heard Egbe and Amadi had entered the UK legitimately on student visas, which had not expired.

Egbe enrolled at Leicester Business Academy, which then closed and he was concerned his visa would be revoked.
He was 'desperate' to stay in the country, the court heard.
All the defendants are likely to be deported after their sentences.

Kanye thinks he was set up by someone in the Kardashian family

Yesterday first photos of Kim, Kanye, baby North and her nanny arriving for a doctor's appointment on Wednesday surfaced online. According to new reports, Kanye is furious about the photos and is blaming someone inside the Kardashian family for tipping off the paparazzi...

Sources tell Radar Online Kanye believes he was set up and is determined to get to the bottom of it.
"Kanye just doesn’t understand the entire families obsession with being in the media spotlight. Kanye knows it wasn’t anyone in the doctor’s office or the nanny that leaked the visit, and the circle of people that knew about the appointment was very, very small.”

Ex-Army Private Turns Serial Conman

A dismissed Army private who poses as an Army Major has been arrested by soldiers for conning unsuspecting members of the public.
Kabiru John was arrested by soldiers serving at 4 Brigade, Nigerian Army, in Benin City, Edo State, southern Nigeria.
John who posed as an Army Major, had allegedly perpetrated numerous fraud, including tricking two men, Ayeni Friday and Tony Kabaka into parting with their vehicles.
The Public Relations Officer of 4 Brigade, Captain Roselyn Managbe, who paraded the fake major and aother suspected criminals, said a Benin-based businessman cum politician, Kabaka, lost his Lexus SUV to the fake Army Major who promised to facilitate his son’s admission into the Nigeria Defence Academy, while Ayeni also lost his Chrysler 300 car under similar circumstance.
Managbe further disclosed that soldiers from the Brigade also arrested suspected armed robbers, including Monday Aigbe, an ex-convict and a suspected narcotics dealer, Mrs. Josephine Ochini.
“On 20 June 2013, Mr. Ayeni Friday of No 17, Eguavoen Avenue, Benin City complained to troops of Operation Thunder Storm that he gave his vehicle, a blue Chrysler 300 2005/2006 model without registration number to Major John Kabiru of 4 Brigade Provost Company for repairs on 28 May, 2013”, Managbe said, adding that all efforts to retrieve the car from Major Kabiru proved abortive.
“Our preliminary investigation revealed that Mr. Kabiru John had been parading himself as a Major in the Nigerian Army. It was also revealed that he claimed to be serving in 4 Brigade as the Officer Commanding the Provost Company. It was further revealed that he was always seen around dressed in full military gear while involving himself in all forms of shady deals and duping unsuspecting victims.
“Mr. John Kabiru confessed that the Lexus jeep which was recovered from him with registration number EDO BF 607 USL belonged to  Mr. Tony Kabaka of 18, Etete GRA, Benin-City. The suspect claimed that he deceived and collected the Lexus jeep from the victim with the promise that he would secure admission for his son into the Nigeria Defence Academy.
“He also confessed that he had duped several unsuspecting persons under the pretext of either helping them to join the Nigerian Army or securing admissions for their wards into military institutions,” Managbe said.
Speaking to journalists, John, who claimed to have joined the army in 2003, said he was dismissed in 2006, adding that he graduated in Electrical Engineering, from Nasarrawa State Polytechnic.
“I served at 82 Battalion, Jos, but I was dismissed in 2006, with the rank of Private. I was doing this (impersonating) because friends that I knew thought I was still in the army. I have learnt to think good things, I have learnt to stay out of crime and stop parading myself wrongly,” he said.
Items recovered from the fake army officer include one fake JTF staff tag, International passport, combat gears, an army kit bag, a digital camera and vehicle number plate.
Others paraded by the Brigade included an armed robbery suspect, Monday Aigbe, an ex-convict, and a suspected narcotics dealer, Mrs. Josephine Ochini.
Among items recovered from some of the other suspected criminals are one long single barrel gun, live cartridge, expended cartridges, military wares, hammer, pliers and three mobile telephone handsets.

Court Stops Rivers Assembly Fracas Probe Panel

A Port Harcourt High Court Friday ruled that Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi lacks the power to set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to probe the failed impeachment fracas at the Rivers House of Assembly on 9 July and therefore should stop sitting forthwith.
The court agreed with an anti-Amaechi lawmaker, Victor Ihunwo, a member of the state House of Assembly representing Port Harcourt Constituency 111, who filed a  suit challenging the Rivers State governor’s powers to set up the panel.
The court ruled that the panel was illegally constituted.
Ihunwo had argued that the governor was a party to the crisis and so cannot be a judge in his own court.
The ruling by Justice Lamenkara Iyayi tallies with Ihunwo’s position that Governor Amaechi was an interested party and whatever would be the outcome of the inquiry would not be fair or seen to be fair to all the parties concerned.
The court also restrained the Rivers State Government, its agents and privies from accepting or acting on any recommendations from the panel of inquiry.
The plaintiff had argued that the issues that the Judicial Inquiry was looking into were already pending at the regular court.
The ruling threw the court into wild jubilation by the anti-Amaechi supporters at the court premises this morning.
Olushola Dare, the Counsel to the Rivers State Government, said after the ruling that his client would abide by the court’s decision but would get back to his client to find out if the judgement should be challenged in the Appeal Court.
Observers of Rivers politics, however, expressed reservations that the ruling of the court could further stoke the political crisis in the state because at the inauguration of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry, Governor Amaechi had charged the panel chaired by Justice Biobele Georgewill, to find out the root cause of the fracas and how to prevent a similar incident from occurring in future.
Yesterday, the Judicial Commission of Inquiry summoned the Minister of State for Education, Chief Ezebunwo Nyesom Wike and the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mbu Joseph Mbu, to appear before it and respond to allegations levelled against them.
Also summoned to appear before the commission are the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state, Felix Amaechi Obuah, Evans Bipi, Victor Ihunwo, Michael Okechukwu Chinda,  Martins Amaewhule, and the former chairman of Emohua Local Government Area of the state, Chukwuemeka Woke.
Members of the commission include Mrs. Oluchi Iwuoha Chimezie of Television Continental (TVC), the General Manager, Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), the General Manager, 92.7 Niger Info FM and the Port Harcourt Area Commander, the Nigeria Police.
Chairman of the Commission, Georgewill, had in a statement said the Commission had received three memoranda from speaker of the State House of Assembly, Otelemaba Dan-Amachree, House leader, Chidi Lloyd, and another one, jointly signed by 25 lawmakers of the Assembly.
In the statement titled ‘Judicial Commission of Inquiry Insists on fair hearing to all the parties in the crisis that rocked the Rivers State House of Assembly’, the judge stated that it has become imperative to make the notice public since those mentioned had refused to appear before the commission.

How Fire Wiped Out Family Of 5

Fire burnt a family of five to death on Wednesday at Mosan in Mosan Okunola Local Council Development Area, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.
The victims were fast asleep when the incident happened in their three bedroom Boys Quarters bungalow located at 9, F Close, Mosan.
Among the victims of the fire disaster, P.M NEWS reliably gathered, was Chukwu Nwike, who sold  female clothes at Yaba, his aunt and her three children.
Nwike was said to be living with the aunt while the husband of the deceased, a pastor, was said to be on a pastoral mission outside the state.
It was gathered that it took the combined efforts of Agege and Ikotun Fire Service men to put out the fire.

•The house where a family of five got burnt to death
When the door of the bungalow was eventually broken after the fire was put out, the remains of Nwike was found close to the burglary proof with one of the kids clinging to it.
The remains of the victims have been removed and deposited in the mortuary.
It was gathered that their neighbours who occupy a four storey building inside the same compound with the deceased, did little or nothing to rescue them.
P.M.NEWS gathered that they were only calling the fire service men for assistance instead of breaking the bungalow’s door when the fire was burning the family who were shouting for help.
When our reporter visit the scene hours after it occurred, the neighbours had deserted the building while Nwike’s colleagues from Yaba market were seen around.
One of them told our correspondent: “ I’m not in the position to speak with you my brother. As you are seeing me, I am confused already. I only offered to lead the prayers for the dead out of inspiration.”
Others described Nwike as a nice and cool headed man who had no time for frivolities.
Some residents of the area who spoke with our correspondent said they could not fathom what caused the midnight inferno.
One of them told our correspondent that the fire disaster could not be ascribed to candle light, saying that there was electricity supply at the time it started.
According to her,”that bungalow has just one door which is just the front door. There was no exit door. Who knows maybe they could have escaped had it been there was an exit door.
“This is what I usually tell my husband, that he should never rent a one door apartment. There should always be an escape route,” she said.
