5 Civil Defence staff nabbed for petrol theft
The police were said to have promptly swooped on the suspects following an alert by vigilant and patriotic people in that neighbourhood where the alleged dastardly act was being perpetrated.
According to the state Police Public Relations Officers, PPRO, DSP Femi Fabode, two of the officers were supposed to be on duty guarding the pipeline against being vandalised, while the remaining three were supposed to be off duty on the day of the incident.
The names of the suspects are Adebayo Toyin, Muritala Jimoh, Imam Olororo Abdulrahgeem, Adisa Ponle and Hassan Abdulwaheed.
The PPRO said the suspects, who came to the venue in two private cars with registration numbers AG820LEM and AG801LFF, had already filled the 50 jerry cans they brought with petrol from the burst pipes before they were nabbed.
Fabode, who said the suspects are undergoing investigation at the headquarters of the Police Command, revealed that they had confessed to the crime and would be handed over to the state NSCDC in Ilorin for trial and further necessary action.
To Fabode,a visit to the scene of the incident would suggest that such illegality by the suspects had been going on for a while.
The suspects, Fabode said, were arrested on Wednesday 21 August at around 10 pm.
When contacted, the spokesman for the NSCDC, Mr. Olarewaju Quadri, said the organisation is already investigating the matter and has also written to the state Police Command on the matter, promising to give more information later on the incident.
