Ameobi gets debut goal, as Nigeria thrash Burkina Faso 4-1

Eagles-P

SHOLA Ameobi got his first goal for the Super Eagles on a day the Nigerian team went goals wire, scoring four goals to Burkina Faso’s one.
The match was expected to be a tough assignment for the Nigerians, who beat the Burkinabe by a lone goal in February to win the 2013 African Nations Cup, but fans at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium, Kaduna were pleasantly surprised by the classic display of attacking football from Stephen Keshi’s boys.
It was such a tame performance by the Stallions that even Brown Ideye, who lost his starting position in the Eagles line up following his poor performance at the Brazil 2013 Confederations Cup, found time and space to score two goals.
Eagles leading striker, Emmanuel Emenike, got the other goal on the day that South Africa-based James Okwuosa made his debut for Nigeria.
Both sides used the match to prepare for next month’s 2014 final World Cup qualifiers playoffs. But the Stallions were without several first team players, including Alain Traore, Aristide Bance and Jonathan Pitroipa.
The Eagles made known their intention as early as the 13th minute when Brown Ideye opened scores, capitalising on a blunder by the visitors’ defence to put the ball past
Lare Diarra. He made it two in the 43rd minute off through ball by John Ogu.
Shola Ameobi, who made his debut for Nigeria late last year, got his first goal for the country in the 53rd minute, before Emenike’s 63rd minute goal completed the glorious outing for the Super Eagles at the packed Ahmadu Bello Stadium.
The Stallions got their consolation goal in the closing period of the game when Simpore tapped in a cross that evaded the Nigerian defence.
Keshi used yesterday’s game to test some of his stars who did not get the opportunity to play in the Brazil 2014 World Cup qualifier against Malawi in Calabar on Saturday.
Thus Austin Ejide started in goal in place of Vincent Enyeama, with Okwuosa, Ogu, Ameobi, Nosa Igiebor and Obinna Nsofor starting the game.
Benjamin Francis, who replaced Elderson Echiejile, Solomon Kwambe (in for Efe Ambrose), Ogenyi Onazi, Sunday Mba, Uche Nwofor, and Nnamdi Oduamadi also featured in the match.
