OVER 15 persons were burnt to ashes on Monday, in a ghastly motor accident involving a petroleum tanker with Registration Number XA 847 GSH and an18-seater Coaster bus, which carried the royal guards of Hadejia Emirate Council.
The accident occurred around 6.00p.m. in Wadugur village in Ringim Local Council of Jigawa State.
The Guardian gathered that the tanker, which was loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), was heading towards Hadejia while the bus was conveying the palace guards to Kano to receive the Emir of Hadejia, who returned from a foreign trip, at the Aminu Kano International Airport.
An eye-witness, Malam Shuaibu stated that the royal guards’ bus was coming from Hadejia to Kano at top speed when it rammed into the tanker during a head-on collision.
Continuing, Shuaibu said the fuel tanker instantly caught fire and its occupants and those of the bus were burnt beyond recognition.
He said that the fire, which lasted for about three hours, from 6.00p.m. to 9.00p.m., occurred amidst heavy downpour.
Shuaibu indicated that prompt intervention from the fire service could only help to recover the charred remains of the victims.
“With the help of men of the State Fire Service, we were able to recover 12 burnt bodies from the bus and three bodies from the tanker.”
As at the time of filing this report, smoke was still billowing from the tanker.
The remains of their bodies were gathered in sacks and were taken to Hadejia for funeral.
The village head of Wadugur, Malam Umar said that the accident happened as a result of heavy downpour and windstorm.
He prayed God to give the families and friends of the deceased the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.
The Chief Imam of Hadejia, Yusuf Abdulraman, conducted the funeral of the deceased.
The Emir of Dutse, Nuhu Muhammad Sanusi, Governor Sule Lamido and other dignitaries attended the funeral ceremony in Hadejia.
