Omawumi
BORN to the late Dr F. Megbele and Mrs Q. Aya Megbele, the power house singer of the jaws of AFRIC, as she likes to call herself, had her primary and secondary education in Warri and moved on to study Law in Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State.
Omawumi auditioned for Idols West Africa and six months later, after dazzling her audience with captivating perfomance, became the 1st runner-up, IDOLS West Africa. Since then, she has numerous performances on the stage with top local acts like D’Banj, Tuface, PSquare and international acts like Chaka Demus and Pliers to her belt, and hit theme songs for corporations which made her an ambassador to Malta Guinness, Glo, Konga and Mortein.
Omawumi in 2005, after she graduated, moved to Port-Harcourt, Rivers State where she worked in O. S. Megbele and Associates while studying French at Alliance Franciase in 2007.
Iyanya
IYANYA Onoyom Mbuk, born October 31, 1986, is a Nigerian recording artist, singer, songwriter, and performer best known for winning the 2008 MTN Project Fame West Africa as well as for his song, Kukere. He sings in English and Efik.
The 2008 MTN Project Fame Competition was the beginning of Iyanya’s musical career. Unlike many people who dwindle after a major competition, Iyanya’s success had just begun.
After winning MTN’s Project Fame, Iyanya began recording his debut album, My Story. The album showed Iyanya’s versatility as an R&B artiste, particularly on the self-titled track Iyanya and Love Truly. Iyanya’s debut album was a commercial failure due to problems with distribution and promotion.
He has also bagged Channel O Video Awards as Most Gifted Male Video and Best R&B Artiste of the Year and one NEA Awards as Hottest Single of the Year 2013.
Olamide
WHEN rapper Olamide came into the scene, he was accused of copying the style of late rapper Dagrin, but street people and music lovers round the globe keep giving him nods and kudos each time he releases a new single. Olamide even said at an interview that those who said he was copying Dagrin would soon change their minds.
This was confirmed as he bagged an award as the Best Indeginous Artiste of the Year 2013 and also had the Best Album award by NEA Awards UK early this month.
Of course, Olamide also recently signed an endorsement deal reportedly worth millions of naira with alcoholic drink, Ciroc Ultra Premium vodka.
With this endorsement deal, the Yoruba rhyme-master, joins international stars like French Montana, Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, Ray Jay, and Funkmaster Flex as an ambassador for the alcoholic beverage.
Tiwa Savage
TIWATOPE Savage (born February 5, 1980), known with the stage name Tiwa Savage, is a Nigerian singer-songwriter, recording artist, and performer. She is currently signed to Sony/ATV Music Publishing and Mavin Records.
Savage established her own label imprint, 323 Entertainment, with her manager Tunji “TJ Billz” Balogun, whom she got engaged to on February 5, 2013.
When Savage stepped onto Nigeria’s musical landscape, she didn’t know what to expect. Moreover, she received a lot of ridicule and hostility from people who believed she wouldn’t make it. She said “a lot of people tried to discourage me from coming home. They told me that people who came before me were not really welcomed home, and that it is even worse for a female singer. They even said there was no way I could be on the same stage with the likes of Tuface, Wizkid and many others. I got discouraged somehow.” Savage didn’t allow people’s negative connotation of her discourage her from doing music. She released her debut single “Kele Kele Love”.
Now there is no turning back for the first African Female Pepsi Ambassador who also recently landed a deal worth millions of naira with MTN.
She has also won several awards like the Channel O Best Female Musician of the Year and Most Gifted R&B Music Video of the Tear, Best R&B Soul Song, MOBO Awards’s Best African Act, amongst many other awards.
PSquare
PETER and Paul Okoye were born and raised in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, where they played for the Pepsi Football Academy. While they were in the senior team then, Chelsea FC of London and Super Eagles midfielder, John Obi Mikel, was in the junior team.
Just a few months ago, the group emerged the Best African Act at the coveted KORA All Africa Music Awards held in Burkina Faso. The award attracted a mouth-watering sum of $1million (N150million).
Meanwhile, the 29 year-old twin singers have moved into their N300 million mansion in Lola Holloway Street, Omole Estate Phase 1, and also acquired four brand new automobiles – two Range Rover Sports, one X6 BMW and a Jaguar, all 2010 models, estimated at about N65 million.
They recently returned from a very successful one and half months musical tour of the United States of America, which ended in New York City on 24 July, 2010.
They are known for their very success full world tours and are ambassadors to various companies and just won the forbes award for one of Nigeria’s most bankable artistes of the year 2013.
KCEE
KCEE Okposo , also known as the Limpopo master, has been in the Nigerian music industry with his partner, Presh, but can be described as one of the artistes who never got heard. He broke up with Presh and experienced the best silence any artiste could experience, until he dropped his miracle song, Limpopo, which finally caught the attention of music lovers and telecommunications giant MTN, who signed a N15 million one-year deal with him.
From one award and show to the other, Kcee is actually enjoying his reign as the Limpopo king and decided not to waste money on frivolous things by visiting the Chinese country to invest in Oil and Gas Business.
Funke Akindele
DESPITE the controversy that rocked her marriage two months back, Funke Akindele, producer of award-winning movie, Jenifa, recently joined the growing roster of public figures and celebrities like Bill Gates, Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, action movie star Jackie Chan and pop star PSY as ambassadors participating in Rotary Club’s public awareness campaign for polio eradication.
Funke Akindele, who is also a Glo ambassador this year, also has five other endorsements with Vitafoam as well as Qlichy.com, a business portal owned by The Quadrant Company; Klin detergent, Jobberman and Lagos Inland Revenue Service.
DBANJ
DAPO Daniel Oyebanjo (popularly known as D’banj, born June 9, 1980), is a Nigerian icon who is a singer-songwriter, an harmonica player and a businessman.
He has won several music awards, including the awards for Best African Act, at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2007, Artist of the Year at the MTV Africa Music Awards 2009 and BET Awards of 2011 for Best International Act, Africa. He adopted the stage name D’banj, a combination of his first name Dapo and his surname Oyebanjo. D’banj is currently best known internationally for his 2012 summer hit Oliver Twist, an up-tempo dance fusion of Afro beats and electronic dance music that topped the African charts 2011 and was a top 10 hit in the UK singles chart in 2012 reaching #2 on the UK R&B chart.
Dbanj who loves to be called Koko Master or the entertainer no doubt has been around for a long time and counting. In July this year, he landed an Etisalat deal which was said by sources to have caused N250 million, and also headlined the Hennessy Artistry event which also runs into millions of naira.
Though his break-up with his best friend and producer, Don Jazzy, almost rocked his career, Dbanj struggled and dropped Don’t Tell Me Nonsense , a song which had strong lyrics boasting to fan that he had been in the industry for a very long time and surely knows his onions.
